Globally a third of all food never makes it to the table.
In the UK, homes discard 4.5 million tonnes of it every year – it mainly goes to landfill where it rots and produces methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
If everyone stopped discarding food waste for ONE DAY it would have the same impact as planting 500,000 trees!
So this is where we can make a significant contribution to improving the sustainability of the planet NOW!
We can plan our menus and shop for ingredients without creating a surplus at home.
We can create meals from leftovers something my parent’s generation excelled at.
We can store food efficiently by tracking what’s in our fridges and freezers.
We can compost any waste if we have access to a small garden plot. If that’s not possible use sharewaste.com to find neighbours with a compost bin (or chickens!)
Food is precious and every little bit we throw away contributes to climate change and biodiversity loss.
This topic will be a priority at Glasgow’s COP26 Climate Change Conference next month.
